Contrary: Opposite in nature, direction or meaning.
When I was younger, I recall my grandmother telling me to “stop being contrary.”
While I might have been an independent thinker as a child, I was most definitely not a debate-oriented kid.
As an adult Christ-follower I might be inclined to disagree with the world’s way of doing things. But, in general, I don’t like being headstrong, nor do I like contrary winds.
“To reach a port we must sail, sometimes with the wind, and sometimes against it. But we must not drift or lie at anchor.”

In sailing, a headwind is a very strong breeze that blows against a moving vessel in the direction that slows it down; it hinders progress.
Try as you might, due to the antagonistic strength of the opposite force, it takes tremendous effort to make even the smallest amount of progress.
Like contrary winds, life is full of trials; sometimes we find ourselves taking two steps forward and one step backward – a wayward course of sorts.
The gospel of Matthew talks about opposing winds as the disciples of Jesus were trying to cross the sea.
As they tried to go to the other side, their boat was tossed with waves.
As we pursue our destiny, strong winds represent something formidable that attempts to hinder forward progress.
It could be an opposing force, such as an event or action that is unexpected – it challenges you as you attempt to complete your course.
What has tried to derail you? Is it sickness, divorce, a job loss, mental illness, financial insecurity or death of a loved one?
It’s comforting to know that all creation – ocean depths and stormy winds bow before King Jesus and fulfill God’s word.
Be encouraged on your spiritual journey today. Commit your way to the Lord and you will succeed.
Remember, the one who perseveres under trial gets the crown of life.
Until next time…. May the wind be at your back and your journey be blessed.
